Hello guys! My name is Theo and I am a second year EMEL student (one of only a few in the college!). As you know EMEL is a course which covers a wide range of language combinations, so it will vary from person to person. For me, I took 4 papers in the first year in my Post A-Level, which were divided equally between language and literature. In Arabic, which was my beginner’s Middle Eastern language, I spent the first year solely working on language which is very grammar intensive. But, being on my (albeit remote!) year abroad, I can say that this focus on grammar is ultimately very useful as it provides the framework to take on new vocabulary very quickly when it comes to being exposed to more of the language. If you want to find out any more, please reach out to me! There is also a great culture of sharing learning resources and notes at Jesus which helped me to form my own ideas in my first year.
