Accommodation
Jesus is one of the few colleges in Oxford which guarantee accommodation for the duration of your degree. The cost of living is subsidised by college as well, so is cheaper than private housing.
Read here about our three main sites: College (1st years), Stevens (2nd years), and Barts (3rd and 4th years), which can be seen on this map of Oxford:
College Site & Ship Street
First years live on-site in either College itself or Ship Street Centre (SSC) across the road. In SSC, there are about 30 single rooms for students with en suite bathrooms. In College, there are a mixture of double sets (for two people, consisting of a large living room, two small bedrooms and a shared toilet/shower), and single sets (half are en-suite, half have shared toilet facilities).
Most first-year students do not have access to a kitchen, but a mini fridge is supplied in every room.
Over the vacs, college can rent out students’ rooms for guests and conferences, so freshers always have to move all their things out at the end of every term and back in again at the beginning of the next - though this is standard for most colleges.
International students are currently allowed three small boxes OR two large suitcases of storage in college.
Staircase Details: small bullet point descriptions of each staircase in Jesus College where the first years live.
Stevens Close
Second years live in Stevens Close, which is in Jericho (North Oxford), a twenty minute walk, or five minute cycle, from College.
It has a total of 36 3-person flats with each flat containing three bedrooms, a shared kitchen / living area and a shared toilet & shower. You can choose who you share a flat with. It also has a very large garden, which is lovely especially in Trinity term.
The lease extends from September through to July, so students can remain in Oxford over the vacations.
Choosing
There are three staircases, blue, red and yellow. Yellow has the reputation of being the loudest, hosting parties, followed by red, which is in the middle, and blue is the quietest.
Yellow staircase has rooms 1-12, Red has 13-24 and Blue 25-36. These start from the ground up so you could choose based on how many stairs you’re happy climbing!
Red flat 13 is wheelchair accessible and disability friendly.
Try to get flats near your friends.
Things to bring
Lots of blankets/pillows, it can get cold, especially in MT and HT.
Coordinate communal items like cooking pots/pans/plates, to make things easier storage-wise.
A lamp is supplied, but it’s nice to have your own as well.
Toilet Roll
Posters and pictures, decoration for the walls. These can make the flat look homely, as well as rugs for the floor.
Bartlemas Close (AKA Barts)
Third and fourth years live in the Bartlemas Close Accommodation Centre, known to students as Barts, which is in Cowley (a neighborhood in East Oxford). This is about a half hour walk, or ten minute cycle, from College.
Students live in flats of three or four people, with two toilets, one shower and shared kitchen/living areas.
Again, the lease extends from September through to July, so students can remain in Oxford over the vacations.
